I’m an engineer that learned FEA by on the job training. Model set up and element selection by similarity to existing models or from more experienced users. This course helped me personally establish a foundation for understanding the finite element method, especially concepts about formulations of element types, element selection and the impact on the stiffness matrix and how poor modeling analytically influences your results. Patrick provides a wealth of knowledge with a good mix of experience from his time in the aviation industry and his work as a specialist with the FAA. Francesco is a key performer who is very personable, very knowledgeable and provides a good atmosphere and approach to learning.

A co-worker and I attended the “Fundamentals of Finite Element Analysis Methods and Modeling Techniques for Structural Analysis Applications- Part 1” instructed by Dr. Patrick Safarian and Dr. Francesco Deleo in Seattle, Washington on October 8-12, 2018. I create on average one FEM per month and review and approve twice as many each month.

This class has a well balanced mix of theory and practical application. Choosing element types had become routine for me without thinking about how the element types work. This was due to the fact that it had been many years since I studied the theory behind FEA. This class gave me more insight into the choosing of element types and what the benefits and shortfalls are with the different element types. This class also provided information on element types that I had never heard of and how they work.

Between Dr. Deleo’s youthful enthusiasm and Dr. Safarian’s humor and experience it was a very enjoyable learning experience. I would recommend this class to both the experienced and novice user of FEA.
